Case Study: Behavioral Health Urgent Care Facility
Client: Anonymous (Michigan)
Industry: Behavioral Health
Project Background
This client was among the first in Michigan to launch a combined Behavioral Health Urgent Care (BHUC) facility with a Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) and Crisis Residential Unit (CRU). The goal: create a calming, therapeutic environment for individuals in crisis, while meeting strict state-mandated safety guidelines for behavioral health spaces.
Design Challenge
We were tasked with selecting interior finishes, furnishings, and decor — ensuring all furnishings in guest areas where individuals may be alone (such as bedrooms) were ligature-resistant, safe, and compliant. The primary challenge was blending this strict functionality with an environment that fosters calm, comfort, and dignity.
Design Approach
· Reviewed safety and space regulations for CSUs and CRUs.
· Selected furnishings and finishes for ligature resistance and durability.
· Used natural textures, calming colors, and soft lighting to avoid an institutional feel.
· Created welcoming, therapeutic environments in each zone — from intake to rest areas.
Project Outcome
The facility opened as one of Michigan’s first integrated BHUCs. The environment to support de-escalation, privacy, and peaceful recovery. It stands as a model for behavioral health design that prioritizes both safety and human dignity.
